PHNST Climate Assessment
NVRC is leading a climate exposure assessment for the PHNST in Northern Virginia, with the aim of identifying areas most vulnerable to climate change along the trail corridor. In particular, the climate assessments will utilize the latest available science, vulnerability data, and NVRC PHNST trail data. Participation in each study phase will involve a range of local stakeholders to not only identify vulnerable areas, but also develop strategies to improve resilience along the trail. To complete these goals, the study is comprised of two phases: (1) a preliminary exposure assessment and (2) vulnerability study and response strategy development.

Report
Kimley-Horn was selected to complete the preliminary exposure assessment, which was completed in February 2026. This assessment resulted in a report that describes the methodology for identifying climate hazards and the related exposure of the trail and its assets. Future climate assessment studies will build off of these initial findings*.
Interactive Map
NVRC has produced interactive maps to view the results of the climate exposure assessment of PHNST trail sections and assets, as well as to explore surrounding spatial context layers that can be used in future analyses to assess the trail's broader vulnerability to climate hazards:
*The follow-on phase 2 climate assessment is on hold and contingent upon future available funding.
