Trail Alerts & Updates

Know before you go! Sections of the trail may be closed or have other special conditions in effect, including COVID-19 protocols.

 

1. NPS's George Washington Memorial Parkway regularly updates alerts and conditions. Parts of the the trail are currently closed. Before heading out onto this section of the Potomac Heritage National Scenic Trail be sure and check for closures and alerts on conditions.

2. As of March 28, 2024 the trail is temporarily closed for approximately six weeks at Scott's Run Nature Preserve in Mclean, Virginia.  The park and trail is temporarily closed during repair of wastewater pipes to maintain the safety of the public and to preserve the natural resources throughout the park.  For updates on the status of this section of trail see the Scott's Run Nature Preserve website.

Visitor Features

There a number of ways to explore and enjoy the PHNST! With various hiking, biking, and/or equestrian paths, the trail provides recreation opportunities for all types of trail users. The PHNST also offers a range of destinations and activities along the trail path, including local, state, and national parks, canoe and kayak launch sites, and other points of interest.
